Our "Retreats" for Adults are unique one-day, 2-hour intensive (but not too intensive!) learning sessions for ages 18 and older, and the perfect start for those with no prior playing experience, or who just want to "begin again". You'll jump right into playing the moment you sit down! By the end of class, you'll be comfortably and independently reading and playing music, and most of the way (if not all the way) through your first lesson book!
"The only regret anyone ever has about taking music lessons, is that they stopped....
or they never started."
or they never started."
Most of our adult students have never had music lessons of any kind, but long desired to, and are slightly fearful that learning will be too difficult, or that they just aren't "musically inclined". If this is your first attempt at playing an instrument, let us set any concerns you might have to rest! First, the lesson moves at your pace -- not the teacher's pace, or the class pace. Second, we guide our students step-by-step, and closely check that they're absorbing new concepts and making a real and lasting connection. Third, we'll help you to practice through everything during the lesson, so that each new exercise or song is mastered before you go on to the next, and you feel confident playing on your own. We take a step back during the session, so that students can work through assignments without feeling rushed, or that someone is hovering over them. But, at the same time, a teacher is accessible at all times to help, answer questions, or demonstrate.
Played an instrument as a kid, and stopped? Many of the adults in our Retreats have had some amount of instruction in their childhood, but aren't sure how much they remember, or they want to brush up on skills. At the start of the class, we typically ask if everyone would be comfortable starting from the beginning for a quick review...then adjust each student individually to their best level and pace, as needed. Piano players work on headphones (so you won't have to play out loud!), and not pushed or held back by anyone else in the class....drums and other instruments are muted so there's not too much acoustic sound. Students can "review" and practice to their heart's content. Whether you've never played an instrument before, or desire to pick up where those childhood lessons left off, it's going to be a lot of fun, and you'll be pleasantly surprised at your progress!

Frequently Asked Questions...and Concerns
Will I have to play out loud in front of anyone? Or, with anyone?
Our Piano Retreats are completely "private" because each digital piano is equipped with dual sets of headphones (one for you, one for the teacher). You can practice without worrying about making mistakes or being put on the spot. In our Retreats for the "out loud" instruments (drums and strings), the instruments are muted to cut back on acoustic sound, so you won't have complete privacy...but, because these instruments are sometimes played in an ensemble setting, getting used to a little additional surround sound is considered good training!
Do I need an instrument at home?
An instrument at home is not required to participate in our Piano or Drum Retreats. But you will make faster progress if you have an instrument at home (or close by) for review between sessions. For piano players, full-sized digital keyboard or acoustic piano is optimal. And, it is fun to have a piano at home so you can enjoy the songs you've learned in the sessions. For drummers, a drum pad at home is sufficient for continued practice and review. Your teacher can advise you on when you might need additional drum pads, heads, or a set.
Is it OK if I've never had any lessons or music experience at all?
Absolutely! No place better to begin than at the beginning! And, you'll be surprised at how quickly you progress with our accelerated format. You'll start reading and playing music from the moment you sit down!
I had some lessons as a child, but I don't remember anything.
We hear this a lot. You may be surprised at how much you retained from those childhood lessons. But, rest assured, we'll review from the beginning, and move at your pace. If it all comes roaring back, we'll move along until we find your true starting point.
How long does it take to learn to play an instrument?
Every student progresses at a unique tempo (see what we did there?). But, what we can assure you is that our lesson program is truly an "accelerated" format, and you'll be learning much faster and more thoroughly than with traditional methods, or weekly private lessons.
I play already, but want to keep learning. Can intermediate and advanced players join the class?
Yes, all levels are welcome! Classes can easily be a dynamic of different levels and experience, and you can move at your perfect pace.
My goal is to play jazz/music for church/classical/in a band....do I have to play the same music as everyone else in the class?
Nope. If there's a particular genre of music that interests you, we can work specifically toward that goal.
I really want to commit to try the Retreats, but my work schedule changes constantly. Can I reschedule if I have a conflict?
If you need to reschedule, just let us know in advance...we can either refund your tuition, or apply it to a future Retreat. We don't adjust tuition for no-show absences, but Students may reschedule into one of our weekly 60-minute lessons, or we can apply your payment toward a future Retreat.
Do you offer weekly lessons for adults?
In our experience, a strict weekly lesson schedule does not work for adults, and they experience faster progress and success with our monthly Retreats. But, in special cases where a weekly commitment is the best fit, yes, we do offer both weekly Accelerated Classes and Private Instruction for Adults.
