Our "Summer Edition" of Piano & Song Explorers is a 4-day (1 hour per day) music program for students ages 6 and up, offered at The Music Studio in Virginia Beach. Designed as a low-commitment, high-discovery experience, this program blends structured piano instruction, creativity, singing, and fun — all in a welcoming evening setting that fits easily into your summer.
Each class focuses on helping students begin reading and playing music independently at the piano, while also exploring the broader world of music. In addition to piano skills, students will participate in light, age-appropriate voice exploration activities that encourage healthy singing, listening skills, confidence, musical expression, and simply discovering the joy of using their own voice.
The 4-day session also weaves in an engaging music theme — such as rhythm, instruments, conducting, composers, or how music works — giving students a more complete and connected understanding of music from the very first lesson. These themed learning experiences are thoughtfully integrated into each class, with each day building naturally on the last.
By the end of the session, students will begin to:
🎹 Read and play simple music independently at the piano
🎵 Recognize notes, patterns, and basic musical symbols
🎤 Gain confidence using their singing voice and musical expression
🥁 Develop rhythm, listening, and coordination skills
🎼 Explore composers, instruments, and how music works
🌟 Build confidence through creating, playing, and sharing music
The result is a well-rounded, memorable experience that not only introduces strong musical skills, but brings music to life in a way that feels exciting and meaningful — even in just four days.
For families curious about piano lessons, Summer Piano & Song Explorers is the perfect starting point — a genuine taste of what music education at The Music Studio looks and feels like, with no long-term commitment required (although many of our current Piano and Vocal students got their start right here!).

"Every child is born with a voice worth developing. Through encouragement, age-appropriate training, and the right guidance, students discover not only how to create beautiful music, but also confidence, self-expression, and the joy of seeing what they are capable of becoming."
Kristiana Jones brings a unique combination of vocal performance training, musicianship, leadership, and a genuine love for teaching young learners. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Performance at Old Dominion University’s F. Ludwig Diehn School of Music, where she has performed extensively in opera, jazz, choir, and musical theatre while earning recognition through multiple vocal competitions and awards.
Beyond the stage, Kristiana has years of experience mentoring and leading children through performing arts programs, camps, and music settings. Her background as a vocalist, ensemble leader, and student director has given her a deep understanding of both music and how students learn best. Kristiana is especially excited to help students discover confidence, creativity, and joy through music while building strong skills in piano, singing, rhythm, musicianship, and self-expression. She brings fresh energy and enthusiasm to our Summer Piano & Song Explorers program and cannot wait to share her love of music with students and families at The Music Studio. |
Sound familiar?
You've been thinking about music lessons for your child for... how long now?
Maybe you tried once before and it didn't stick.
Maybe you've been waiting for the "right time."
Maybe you're worried about the cost, the commitment, or whether your child will actually practice.
Here's the truth: Another year will go by, and music will still be something your child is going to do "someday" — unless you give them a low-risk way to start now.
That's exactly what this program is.

From First Lesson to Confident MusicianWatch what happens when kids learn to read music from day one:

This is what real progress looks like. Not months of memorizing one song. Not endless practice battles. Just steady, confident growth in a program designed to make kids actual musicians — not just music students.
What is the Piano & Song Explorers?
What is the Piano & Song Explorers? It's a short-term (4 consecutive days, and only 1 hour each day), piano program + singing and music exploration designed for families who want to try music lessons without the overwhelm of a long-term commitment.
Here's what makes it different:
🎹 Learning happens IN class, not at home
Your child learns, practices, and makes progress during the 60-minute class each week. No fighting over practice at home. No guilt when they "forget." All the work happens with us.
📖 Reading first, not memorization
Most piano and vocal programs teach kids to memorize songs by watching the teacher perform first. We teach kids to read music from day one — which means they can sit down at any piano and figure out new music on their own. That's real fluency.
⚡ Faster progress than traditional lessons
Our small group format allows students to move through music at about twice the rate of traditional 30-minute private lessons. More time = more music covered = faster skill development.
🏠 No piano required at home
We provide the pianos. Your child practices during class. Eventually a keyboard at home is fun (and we can recommend affordable options), but it's absolutely not required to start or succeed.
🔄 Flexible makeup options
Life happens. If your child needs to miss a class, we work with you on makeup options. No stress, no penalty.

Why small group piano classes work BETTER
You might be thinking:
"Shouldn't my child take private lessons for more individual attention?"
"Shouldn't my child take private lessons for more individual attention?"
Here's what we've learned after 30+ years of teaching piano:
Private lessons create dependency. Students watch the teacher demonstrate, then try to copy what they saw. They're not learning to read music — they're learning to imitate sounds.
Private lessons rely almost entirely on home practice and repetition. Progress stalls when practice at home doesn't happen - because they haven't truly learned to read...only to imitate, repeat the same songs, and memorize.
Small group classes build independence. Students learn to read music from the very first day — no demonstrations to copy. They figure things out themselves (with guidance). They practice the tricky parts during class, so home practice is actually fun instead of frustrating. And they stay accountable because their peers are working alongside them.
The result?
Students who can confidently sit down at any piece of music and play it — not just pieces they've memorized by ear or by rote.
That's the difference between piano lessons that fade away after a few months... and musical skills that last a lifetime.

What parents are saying about our piano & song program
"Best studio in town! My son learned to play piano with them. In over 6 years of continuous sponsorship of this studio, I have NEVER experienced anything negative from them. Classes are well structured, considering student's learning pace. Instructors and assistants are great. They have a 'special gift' in handling and motivating kids to enjoy the art of music."
— Christian H., Virginia Beach

— Kristen L., parent of Piano Summer Explorers student

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Does my child need a piano at home?
A: Nope! We provide the pianos during class, and all learning and practice happens during the 60-minute session. Eventually having a keyboard at home is fun, but it's not required to start or succeed in this program.
Q: What if my child is not confident about singing?
A: We're all born with basically the same "equipment" to sing, and with the right approach, age-appropriate training, and some understanding of how our vocal chords respond to the right exercise, we improve and gain confidence. Our instructors provide a safe space for musical growth to happen, but will never put a child on the spot, or in a situation where they're not completely comfortable!
Q: What if my child has never played piano before?
A: Perfect! This program is designed for complete beginners. No prior musical experience needed.
Q: What if my child needs to miss a class?
A: We offer flexible makeup options. Just let us know in advance and we'll work with you to reschedule.
Q: Is this a small group class or private lessons?
A: This is a small group class (4-6 students max). We've found that small groups actually produce faster progress than traditional private lessons because students learn to read music independently from day one, practice during class, and benefit from peer accountability. We reserve private lessons for students at advanced levels.
Q: What happens after the 4 days are over?
A: If your child loves it (and we're confident they will!), they can continue into our regular ongoing piano program. But there's absolutely no pressure or obligation to continue — the 4-day session stands alone as a complete introductory experience.
Q: How much does it cost?
A: $129 for all 4 classes. That's just $32.25 per 60-minute class — less than a single 30-minute private lesson at most studios, but you're getting twice the instruction time in a format that produces faster results.
Q: What if my child is shy or anxious about group classes?
A: Small groups are actually less intimidating than one-on-one private lessons for many kids! With only 4-6 students, it feels supportive and fun rather than overwhelming. Plus, learning alongside peers helps kids stay motivated and engaged.
Q: Can I stay and watch the class?
A: For the first class, you're welcome to stay and observe to see how things work. After that, we encourage parents to drop off and pick up so students can focus fully on learning. We'll be sure to keep you posted on your child's progress...and you can always peek in at any time!
Q: What ages are appropriate for this program?
A: Ages 6+ are perfect for this class format. Students younger than 6 typically don't have the attention span for 60-minute classes yet.
Q: My child tried piano before and quit. Will this be different?
A: Probably! Most kids quit piano because of one of three reasons: (1) practice battles at home, (2) they felt like they weren't making progress, or (3) they were just memorizing songs, not actually learning to read music. Our program solves all three: practice happens in class, students move quickly through music, and we teach real reading fluency from day one.
